Yvette Winburn – Diamond in the Rough

I almost clicked right past this one.  I got two fuzzy pictures from a young lady by the name of Yvette Winburn, hailing from Louisville, KY.  Normally when I see pics like this, I hit the Delete button.

But then I took a closer look.  Past the blurriness.  Past the lack of light.  And I saw a diamond in the rough.  First, the darker/blurred of the two images:

Now, one with better light.  This is some pretty “Wow” stuff.  Even though Yvette only hits the 5 foot, 8 inch mark, something about her gives me the impression that height will be no issue for her.

Elana Koh

What’s going on here?  Invasion of the aspiring-models-who-hail-from-Ohio?

First, the Ohio part:  see yesterday’s post about Alicia Angel, a model from Cincinnati.  Seriously, folks, Ohio–after 100 years of being totally ignored by the world–is now on the cutting edge of culture and technology.  I was talking with someone I know recently about this.  Whenever something happens, it happens in Ohio.  It’s kind of like the anti-Vegas slogan (”Whatever happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”).  Face transplants were the most recent Famous Thing to Happen in Ohio.  Now models are springing from Ohio. I don’t get it.

As it turns out, Miss Koh is no slacker at all.  She models.  She does the pageant circuit.  She is an active volunteer.  For me–a fella who must slave over pics of aspiring models every day of my life–it’s refreshing to find someone who is a person behind all this.  I’ll admit that I’m not completely in love* with the photos we were sent–the photos, not the model–and i even searched in vain for some extras over at Model Mayhem–nada.

Alicia, Our Angel of Cincinnati

Normally, I get less-than-excited when height-challenged aspiring models submit photos.  Like it or not, tall is the coin of the realm when it comes to editorial fashion modeling.  But is editorial fashion modeling the only thing in the world?  And are the rules of yesterday the same as the rules of today?

Hardly.  Alicia Angel, a pseudonym for an aspiring Cincinnati, OH resident who hopes to break into modeling, has the piercing stare and a confident physicality of an accomplished model.  She has a couple of photos that might qualify as being worthy of a portfolio.  Alicia has real potential; and even though things are a little rough at this point, any interested agents/editors can most likely persuade Miss Angel to spiff up her portfolio and lock into the kinds of things that the industry likes to see.

I got a good set of photos from Chloe Gordon (UK) – either professionally done or done by an amateur who knows how to compose a shot.  For the most part, Chloe manages to steer clear of the big complaints that I get from agents and photographers…but still too many photos of the lip piercing and the tramp stamp (not shown here).  I cannot emphasize enough how these people are looking for “clean” photos without too much body adornment.

I’m not quite sure what to make of this one. Lika Key is Georgian (and we’re not talking Atlanta-and-peanuts-Georgia), and she is that optimal model age of 16. She’s damned cute, and has some potential…but I have basically no other photos of her. So, use your imagination.

Brooke Ulrich, Composition, and Professionalism: What Do They Mean?

Odessa is Texas oil country:  hundreds of miles between freeway exchanges, lonely oil pumps, vast limitless vistas.  In my numerous cross-country drives, I have always loved that section of the country.

Brooke Ulrich is from there.  I knew an Ulrich from that area–a tall, ungainly dude who did not fit his pickup artist first name, and who looked nothing like Brooke.

Whatever.  This is a lesson in how to do things.  We’ll talk about why this particular photo is so strong.  First let’s get the details out of the way.  Hop below the photo for them.

Now, here’s the point.  This is what a top-notch photo set looks like.  The photographer, Michael Vincent, knows his stuff, and knows how to pull out every shred of insane greatness from his models.  Why does this photo work?

Well, there are about ten reasons why (color coordination with the truck, Brooke’s jaw angle, etc.  But pulling just one takeaway from this you find all these aggressive perspectives pointing straight to Brooke.  Vincent piled them on, and I didn’t even take the trouble to highlight all of them.

Did Brooke pay out of pocket for these?  Were they part of a magazine shoot?  We don’t know.  But it is clear that there is a vast gulf between piss-ass, crappy amateur photos taken by your douchebag boyfriend–and a set taken by someone who knows his craft.   The ultimate question to ask yourself:  Is my career worth going this extra step?  I believe it is.

A Model Education: Zara Chandler

After my earlier rant about the sorry state of models’ pix and the way they represent themselves, we have a breath of fresh air from Portsmouth, England.  Zara Chandler’s stats:

But the real point here is to show you a decent photo set.  First, we combine several to show you how she presents a variety of poses, styles, settings.  #1 and #2 are conventional.  #5 displays backside (yes, models, you do exist in all 3 dimensions – get used to it).  Personally, I am glad to see no tramp stamp.  #6 is a close-in shot, showing how Zara can model baubles (yes, the industry needs girls to display rings, watches, bracelets, etc.); #4 is intriguing, and I discuss this in more detail further down.  Now, look at #7 and #9.  How do these work?  They are a bit bizarre, yes?  Well, that is the point.  What these accomplish is they break up the pattern that jaded eyes see so often.  Jaded industry eyes see the same things over and over – so you need to throw in a couple of simply strange photos…just for effect.   Now, jump below the photo and keep reading.

What we have here is just an error in composition.  It seemed like a good idea at the time to have Zara sling her leg over the baby carriage handle.  But when transmitted into the flat 2-D world, it doesn’t work.  There is something vaguely sexual about that handle approaching her lower region, and not sexual in a good way.  But this is no big deal.  Simply take the photo out of the set.  It seems nit-picky, but believe me, they notice things like this.

Finally, I absolutely love this last photo.  The composition is wonderful.  Notice those strong diagonals created by her legs?  Her entire body forms a triangle, which is perfectly off-set by the white background.

I would have to say my only beef with the set is the same one I have reiterated to models before:  model more fashion.  We need to see a greater range of fashion on Zara.  And that applies to everyone else, as well.  Otherwise, well done, Zara.

Models, I’m Getting Mad at You

We’re seeing far too much of this bad model behavior which is limiting your chances at ever becoming a model.  I am not the only one who has noticed this, and I am probably not the first to mention it.

• We’re talking about things like portfolios that are utter crap – portfolios that aren’t portfolios.
• Pix taken by boyfriends, sisters, or God forbid, by webcam.
• Bizarre and non-dignified tattoos, piercing, scarification.
• Etc., etc.

Have some self-respect, pull your act together, market yourself as a model properly.

Victoria Pitt: Model of Many Different Faces

We received a submission from an interesting model named Victoria Pitt. What is interesting about her is that, as evidenced by the photos, she can easily be the “girl next door” or a girl with a much sexier, edgier side. The South puts out a lot of beauties, but Miss Pitt surely is one of Summerville, SC’s finest.

But here is the remarkable part.  In this photo, she manages to combine both qualities at the same time.  This photo originally came to us horizontally, but we had to flip it 90 degrees to give you a better sense of her unique style.

Miss Pitt is 20 years old, 32/24/33, standing 5 feet, 5 inches.  She is an “A” cup, and considers her eyes her best feature.
